The Shikon pearl was projected out of the body of a Divine Miko who resided a very long time in the town of Demonslayers( the hometown of Sango). It was created after the Divine Miko died after failing to purify and redeem a monster in a huge battle. Therefore it's believed that within the pearl itself, the spirits of both the Divine Miko and that particular monster are still locked in an ideological battle.
The magical Shikon
Pictured above is the legendary Miko (witch) called Kikyo. the Shikon Pearl was entrusted into the care of Kikyo in the hope that she can purify it after a long succession of caretakers succumbed to mishaps of a mysterious nature.
For a moment, Kikyo look set to be the destined Keeper of the Shikon. However, things took a turn for the worst after she took a badly injured bandit, Onigumo in her care. Housed in a cave and unable to move, Onigumo's evil desires soon led him to entertain dark thoughts of possessing both Kikyo and the Shikon for his own selfish ends.
In the meantime, Kikyo befriended the half demon, Inuyasha and soon both of them were in the throes of romance.
This is Onigumo. As i have said earlier on, he entertained dark thoughts about Kikyo and the Shikon. Jealousy of Inuyasha as well as frustration over his incapacitated form caused him to invite Demons to feast on his body so as to attain a powerful body. That vile creation was Naraku. Unbeknownst to Onigumo, the feasting did not merely gave rise to a powerful body, it led to the birth of a new consciousness. One form which encapsulated the consciousness of Onigumo within the murky depths of Naraku itself.
