XP Pro:
Recent windows updates have resulted in the appearance of 3 processes namely
1. searchfilterhost.exe
2. searchprotocolhost.exe
3. searchindexer.exe
These three processes are not malware but are part of Windows Indexing facility. Basically it does indexing on your hard disk so that hard disk loadup timings are zippier and webcrawls the web by recognising your usual websurfing patterns.
Sounds like a good idea? Not quite though.
They draw a fair bit of your computing juices making your computer grind because these 2 processes operate on the sidelines all the time! If you happen to be running windows update i.e. wuauclt.exe then hallejujah to you man.
Now here is how you can disable the services for goodness's. Take note that killing the processes in the task manager won't work because they are immortal processes that will regenerate again...and again and again and again till your fingers fall off.
Click start and run.
Type "services.msc"
Under services look for Windows Indexing
Double click and change the startup to be manual rather than default automatic.
Once this is done, kill the service for good by stopping it!
yay!
