Other than the little vid which I produced courtesy of my new phone :D, I believe that scant mention had been made about my job let alone the banes of it. My job nearly ceased to be last week, albeit voluntarily of my own will. I wouldn't comment much of my job scope at this point of time other than the fact that I work long hours from 0930hrs to 1900hrs from Monday to Friday and that my work as a Customer Service Officer entails a workload that is hopelessly endless.
The root cause of my unhappiness began when it was revealed to me that I was earning a pittance of only $4.80/hr according to the formula of my recruitment agent. For the measly amount I was being paid, I also had to fill in flimsy timesheets, hand them personally to the agent every fortnight and endure rude conversations from the Agency's call centre. The worst thing of it all was that I had nasty colleagues from Sales who tried to lord it over me just because I am a temporary employee. Being the person I am, I would have none of it.
But one incident last Friday simply pushed me over the edge and I told my manager nonchalantly that I was going to tender my resignation with one week's notice. Being oblivious of all the ongoings scuffles I was in, she was obviously baffled. I was there to cover the duties of my other colleague who was on maternity leave and if I left, there will be noone who could take over at a short moment's notice. It may seem like a rash decision but I felt that I could no longer tolerate a measly pay, crappy colleagues, bloodsucking agents and a few mountains' worth of work.
To prove that I wasn't making a rash decision, I personally trawled the Ministry Of Manpower's website to ensure that what I was doing won't have legal repercussions. Hadn't I done so, i wouldn't have known that a peson under the age of 21 in Singapore is not of contractual age to enter into a employment contract. Expectedly, the agency threatened me with legal action. Hohoho, I just whacked with all of my eloquency is worth and slammed the entire Employment Act on them. That shut them up for good.
However something good come out of this episode. My big boss, a Caucasian, came into the picture and took the errant colleague from Sales to task. I am not really sure of the specifics but I do know that the higher ups had a meeting together with that errant guy. Thrice the guy spoke out against me and thrice Boss shot him down like a wild goose in Open Season. Whoops! Boss spoke out in defence of me! After the meeting, my manager had a discussion with me and persuaded me to stay and enter into employment directly under the company. I was also offered a monthly salary of $1,250 over the measly sum that I used to get. So the outcome of this incident was that I manage to jump out of the clutches of the Agency, negotiated for a better remuneration and sent a strong warning to those who were out to lord over me.
