Fearless the Movie
The moviemakers were reportedly lambasted by Huo Yuan Jia's living descendants (yes he has living descendants...) for veering off the facts. I see you shaking your head in disbelief out there. Isn't Huo supposed to be a famous martial arts exponent who died heirless? Apparently, the reel life of Huo in the movie doesn't exactly mirror his real life here.
Another discrepancy made in the blockbluster that is decidedly a folly now is Huo's social status. The Tianjin native was cast as a typical upper class bourgeois who resided in a sprawling complex of a house with loads of money to spare till his ill-fated foray in duels that is. In actual fact, his great-grandson corrected by saying that Huo was actually the son of farming parents.
Tsk tsk... Fearless was lauded as the movie to watch primarily because of its nationalistic theme. In an age where youngsters are obsessed with worldly possessions, Jet Li had hoped that this movie would be able inspire the young in a positive manner. Despite its openly altruistic aim, the movie now appears to me as a typical commercial product, barely veneered with a charitable cover.
